Philosophies

Core values and beliefs: I believe that each person’s greatest room for growth is in the areas of their greatest strength. That employees should be selected for their talents rather than their skills or experience. That it is important to define the right outcome rather than the right steps. I believe that each person is unique, and that the best way to develop people is to find the right fit for each person. I believe that motivation comes from within, and that the most important thing that a manager can do is to provide a fertile environment to foster motivation.

On hiring:
  • A job is all about the right fit; the rest is just details.
  • Hire for attitude; train for skills.
On work-life balance:
  • Love what you do, and you will enjoy the time that you spend there. But remember the bigger reasons for working in the first place. Life is too short to waste time doing something that you don’t love.
On earning your keep:
  • When you work, you are trading value for value.
  • Most jobs are designed to be done in a  normal working day, but when the job calls for it, stay until the work is complete.
  • When you’re sick, you’re sick. Stay home, get better, and don’t infect the rest of the office. If you are capable of getting some work done from home, great, then do so.
  • Fairness is a two-way street; be fair to your employer and they will be fair to you.
On success:
  • Focus on your strengths.
  • There are no shortcuts in life.
  • I’m a great believer in luck, and I find that the harder I work the more I have of it. -Thomas Jefferson
  • You don’t learn about success by studying failure.
  • Perfection is not the standard by which we judge success; we judge it by comparing it with the alternative.
On life:
  • Stay hungry, stay foolish. -Steve Jobs
